If you were born before the rise of gadgets, you probably have a haul of amazing childhood memories like playing hide and seek, climbing trees, or maybe wading in the rain puddles. Feels good to reminisce, right? Would have been better if we can turn back the clock and do it all again even just for a day.
One of the most talk about topics online is the screen time rules for kids. How much screen time will you allow your children to have? Are you one of the parents who would like to have their kids experience the fun and adventures of outdoor activities and keep them away from phones and gaming consoles or are you happy to see your little ones safe inside your house, entertained by the gadgets in their hands?
During your childhood days, your parents were most likely concerned with: where you've been, who were you with, what kind of games you and your friends doing, how did you get your knees bruised, and such. But today, things have changed. Our technologies have evolved and so as our kids. You may have noticed what makes most millennial kids, if not all, busy and what interests them most - anything with backlights, screens, and buttons.
The debate as to whether parents should let their kids have some "fun" time or even have their own phones has been long heated and has accumulated different viewpoints. It is true that you can find a lot of education apps for your mobile phone or tablets, but it is also true that social media can easily influence a child's behavior and way of thinking, especially now that cyber-bullying is becoming common in primary schools.
So, what's the best thing to do? In topics like this, we do not want to give our own opinion; rather, we encourage every mom and dad to weigh the pros and cons. What are the factors to consider? Is 1-2 hours screen time for kids 3 years and up good enough? Do you have time to monitor your kids' downloaded apps? Do you plan to join your kids during TV time? Or would you like to have your kids be involved in physical activities instead? Do you prefer to have your kid participate in outdoor sports like basketball instead of being hooked in mobile shooting games?
Always remember that every decision you make for your child will greatly affect their personality and overall well-being. Only you, as their parent, can decide what's best for your child and we trust every parent's instinct to be at their children's best interest.

For me, I want it to be a balance of screen time play and old school play. We can't deny the fact that technology plays a major role in children's entertainment today. But I also want my child to experience playing outdoors and discover and learn her about her environment, get dirty and sweaty! 😉
ReplyDeleteScreen off. learning to use some gadgets can be good, fun and even educational, but spending too much time sitting still each day can be bad for kids health. It’s important to balance screen time with active play time so that kids body can grow strong, fit and healthy. ❤
ReplyDeleteAs parents,we are overloaded with work and don’t find quality time to spend with our kids and we try to divert them by giving gadgets to get things going. Overtime they get addicted to them and we regret it. We can avoid this by spending some time with kids. Play board games with them, ask them about what they did in school, travel with them without gadgets will be best for the family to bond and enjoy, ask them to walk and jog with you in the park, this way we can spend more time with our kids. But because we are now at a new generation and living with technology we should create a safe digital environment for children. We should help our children learn how to use their devices responsibly, as parents, should have the ability to monitor their child’s lives online. We can schedule app and device usage, so that children can focus while they are at school/studying/playing and they get to experience the best of both worlds.Always remember, our kids are our future. Our child needs us,gadget cannot replace us.
ReplyDeleteI only allow my 5-yr old daughter screen time during weekends. We added download restrictions on my phone coz thats what she uses. Her apps and games can stimulate her thinking skills. I also give her time to play and interact with her friends as we want her to grow sociable.

ReplyDeleteFor me as a mother of 5 yrs old never xa mkahawak ng gadget pg my school days pg uwi sa bhay una q pinapagawa sa knya eh assignment nya...at pg tpos my iba laruan nmm xa na pede kesa sa gadget... pinapayagan q lng xa pg Saturday my oras din atleast 2 hrs lng ibabalik na nya sakin...maganda na din Kase my discipline Ang bata habang lumalaki...
As long as nililimit kung gaano katagal as well as kung ano ang mga pwede nilang i-access. Hanggat maaari wag hayaan manood or maglaro ng anything that involves violence.
Kapag naglalaro sila tinitiyak naming may magbabantay o may kasama silang mapagkakatiwalaan.

ReplyDeleteI used my phone to show my daughter high contrast video. I think it helped her develop her eyesight.I only exposed her about a minute or 2 but not on a daily basis.
With the array of media available for our kids today and their amazing ability to watch TV, instant message, and listen to music and watch videos all at the same time what’s the best way for them? On or Off Screen? For me, I will always prefer OFF SCREEN for our baby. Here are the things on how we make the cut:
ReplyDelete1. Make a family media plan. Draft guidelines that include how much screen time is allowed, when (and where) screens can be used, and what kinds of media are acceptable. Working on a family plan is a good opportunity to define your family's values and discuss how people can be good digital citizens. It’s much easier to exercise control when your child is within view. So that means keeping video games, the TV and the computer in a common area where you can keep an eye on things.
2. Don’t give your kids their own tablet or smartphone. Interact with your children. Do that instead of handing them an electronic device.
3. Watch together. As much as possible, join your child during screen time, and focus on the program instead of multitasking. You need to know what your child is watching so you don't end up surprised if a show, game, or website proves to be not as kid-friendly as you thought. Watching together also helps you talk with your child about what she's seeing.
4. Be a role model. Follow the same guidelines you expect your child to follow. Be intentional about your screen time use, and turn off screens when you're not actively watching a show or using technology. Put down your phone when you're spending time together as a family.
Balanced on and off screen. I don't want the gadget be my daughter's pacifier. I would love her to have personal interaction
ReplyDeleteGuided screen time. A friend once pointed out how their tablet taught my godson how to read! But also allow time for interactive play.
